If you're wanting to be a volunteer lifesaver, you've come to the right spot!

St Kilda Life Saving Club offers a range of training sessions and courses, both through face-to-face sessions and online platforms, and via other Life Saving Clubs including Life Saving Victoria.

 

This dual approach allows club members to enhance their proficiency in life-saving techniques and acquire valuable skill sets. By expanding their skill sets through both face-to-face training and online availability, our life savers are better equipped to handle vital and crucial situations effectively.

Courses & Training

Minimum training to become a lifesaver (13+)

Courses and training on offer: St Kilda Life Saving Club provides a diverse array of courses and training opportunities, catering to various preferences and needs. Our offerings include both online and face-to-face options, collaborating not only with St Kilda Club but also with other Life Saving Clubs. This comprehensive approach ensures that individuals can choose the learning format that best suits them while fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among different life-saving communities.

  • Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)
    • This course provides participants with skills and knowledge of surf awareness, aquatic rescue operations and resuscitation in order to participate in lifesaving operations and act in the role of Water Safety Personnel (SLSA)

 

Completing the Surf Rescue Certificate is similar to the Bronze Medallion. However, some areas are not learnt in contrast to the Bronze Medallion. Ideally the Surf Rescue Certificate is open to those between 13 to 15 years old. Anyone is allowed to complete the Surf Rescue Certificate.
To have successfully complete your Surf Rescue Certificate, you have must:

  • Be at least 13 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Have completed a 200 metre swim in under five minutes unaided (goggles/mask permitted), in a swimming pool not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water.

Minimum training to become a lifesaver (15+)

  • Bronze Medallion
    • The Bronze Medallion course provides participants with the skills and knowledge in order to be able to participate in Surf Life Saving patrol operations. This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia. (SLSA)

 

Completing the Bronze Medallion requires participants to complete various activities and sections:

  • Be a minimum 15 years of age on the date of the final assessment
  • Have completed a 200 meter run – 400 meter swim – 200 meter run in under nine minutes unaided (goggles/mask permitted), in a swimming pool not less than 25 metres, or over a measured open water.

Further training

First Aid
The First Aid Certificate provides the knowledge and skills needed to manage emergency first aid situations and deliver competent emergency care until the arrival of professional medical support.
Radio Operator

The Radio Operators Certificate provides participants with the skills and knowledge to operate communications systems and equipment in surf lifesaving operations.

Spinal Management

The Spinal Management Certificate addresses the need to identify and manage victims with suspected spinal cord injuries in the aquatic environment.

Advanced Resuscitation

The Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate (ARTC) teaches the principles of airway management and oxygen aided resuscitation.

All-Terrain-Vehicle

The All-Terrain-Vehicle certificate allows club members to operate specific vehicles on the beach to enhance patrols and operational capacities.

Inflatable Rescue Boat - Crewperson

The Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Crewperson course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations.

Inflatable Rescue Boat - Driver

The IRB Driver is responsible for safely operating the IRB in the surf zone and managing the IRB Crew.

Silver Medallion - Aquatic Rescue

The Silver Medallion – Aquatic Rescue provides participants how to effectively coordinate search and rescue operations.

Silver Medallion - Patrol Captain

The Silver Medallion – Patrol Captain is recommended to all Patrol Captains which upskills lifesavers to manage a beach.
